April’s birthstone is diamond, but after this month, the powers that be may want to change it to blue diamond.
On April 24, a 5.3 ct. fancy deep-blue diamond sold for $9.6 million at Bonhams’ Fine Jewellery sale in London—setting a record $1.8 million per-carat price for a diamond that color.
The buyer was London-based Graff Diamonds. The jewel—set in a Trombino ring made by Bulgari—is set horizontally within a mount pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds and baguette-cut diamonds. The circa-1965 piece had been estimated to fetch $1.3 million–$1.9 million.
“We are delighted with the price," Jean Ghika, director of Bonhams jewelry department for Europe, said in a statement. "It was a sensational stone which charmed everyone who viewed it prior to the sale.”

April Birthstone- DIAMOND

"BIG girls need big diamonds." Elizabeth Taylor

Diamond is known as the "King of Gems." It's name is derived from the Greek word adamas, which means "invincible." I know that's how I feel when I am wearing one!

Christie’s New York will auction the 34.65 ct. Princie Diamond, the largest Golconda fancy intense pink diamond ever offered for sale at auction, on April 16 in New York City.

Historic cushion-cut fancy intense pink diamond, weighing approximately 34.65 cts.
The 34.64 ct. diamond can be traced back to the ancient diamond mines of Golconda in south central India. It was named after the Prince of Baroda. It is expected to fetch between $30 million and $40 million.
Other highlights of the sale include a three-strand natural pearl necklace, valued at $1 million–$1.5 million, and a 23.30 ct. Harry Winston diamond ring, valued at $2.5 million-$3.5 million.
“One of the largest and finest pink diamonds in the world, the Princie Diamond carries a fabulous provenance, which brings together the legendary names of Golconda, Nizam of Hyderabad, and the Maharani Sita Devi of Baroda,” François Curiel, chairman of Christie’s jewelry department, said in a statement. “This rich history, combined with its rare pink hue, conveys a special charm, which will speak to all collectors in the world seeking the best of the best in gemstones.”

This spring, jewelry collectors and movie lovers will have a chance to own pieces from the collection of legendary actress and sex symbol Gina Lollobrigida.
On May 14, Sotheby’s Geneva will feature 23 jewels from the collection of the legendary actress and sex symbol in its Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels sale. Part of the proceeds from the auction will benefit stem cell research.
“I began collecting jewels from Bulgari in the 1950s and 1960s, drawn by the wonderful craftsmanship and distinctive style of these pieces," Lollobrigida said in a statement. "They accompanied me on many journeys—both professional and personal—and are redolent of those times and the extraordinary people I met along the way.
"These days I am focusing my time on my career as a sculptor," she continued. "A sculptor has little need for jewels, and so, I have decided the time is right to share them with other collectors. In so doing, I can also help a cause very close to my heart, that of stem cell research treatment, which I believe should be freely available to every child. It is my wish that part of the proceeds from the sale will contribute to help fund an international hospital for stem cell research.”
A pair of Bulgari natural pearl and diamond pendant earrings made in 1964 is estimated to earn $600,000–$1 million.
